Visit ASMAT TRIBE - Lifetime Experience

asmat jowBeing the main access to visit Asmat region is by the pioneer flight from TIMIKA to Ewer. The flight is using a Twin Otter, 15 seats plane.

Our arrangement in Asmat will take them to visit several villages where the locals are still living in the long house called Jow. In addition to this, we will also held some cultural ceremonies for them.

Most of the Asmat villages lies either on the coast or on the riverbank. Therefore no wonder if their houses are built on stilt, even a small market, small public health centre, and foot ball yard are built on stilt.

There is no hotel available in Asmat, the only possible way is either to stay at the local house which we call bujang (long house) house, or on Agats, there is a simple accommodation which cost is change from time to time.

Asmat bujang house is the home for the all still unmarried man or widower. There can be many male living in the long house. Each of them form a long house community where the oldest one among them usually become the leader. That bug group of men usually separate into small male group who can be recognized from the number of kitchen. Each kitchen representing one small group, while the kitchen of the leader usually lies on the very centre of the house.

Being the most interesting ones are the cultural attraction including sago making party, and mBis Pole ceremony.

The Sago making party is an attraction showing us how the Asmat tribe work on the sago field, cut down the tree, cut the bark and take soft inner part of the tree, crush them into soft powder and mix them with water to extract the sago starch. In the afternoon, they will be back to the village and we can enjoy the "harvest" of today. Asmat main food staple is sago, supplemented with some fishes, or crabs, or local vegetables.

The second one is the mBis pole ceremony. mBis pole is a wooden statue, about 4 m or more in length either in the shape of human or other creature. According to the Asmat peoples, the mBis pole is representing the ancestor, and also the home of the good spirit who will protect them from the bad spirit. In certain time, the pole has to be "cleaned" spritually. This ceremony is held in the long house of the man. Sometimes a new pole is needed, then the ceremony will take longer time. During the pole is made, no woman can see it before finished.

Flight to and from Ewer is quite often to have some delay or even some cancellation. All costs happen due to the pioneer flight delay / cancellation will be on their own. if the airline cancelled in Ewer (to Timika), they may have to stay at the small accommodation on the runway area. Also, they will need some food as well. You have to be ready with this situation.
