The famous Asmat tribes men live in the harsh environment on the south coast of West Papua. This ethnic group is fishermen and carvers. Asmat means street or wood people. Every year, they conduct the Sago-Larva feast. Recently the local government of West Papua together with the tourism office started the yearly art and culture festival on the first week of October, to support and maintain the Asmat art and culture. Besides traditional dance, during the festival, they sell Asmat wood carvings.

The Asmat people who live along the remote southeast coast around Agats are famed for their artistic “primitive” woodcarving. Modern civilization did not reach this area until recently. Agats has an interesting museum filled with woodcarvings and other objects. The area, however is still largely an untamed wilderness.

Asmat crafts received a boost in the late 1960s under a United Nations supported project to encourage local craftsmen to keep alive their art.

Most of the Asmat villages lies either on the coast or on the riverbank. Therefore no wonder if their houses are built on stilt, even a small market, small public health centre, and foot ball yard are built on stilt.

We fly Timika - Ewer by pioneer flight. Ewer is a the name of airstrip in Asmat region, from Ewer by motorized canoe about 30 minutes to Agats (main town of Asmat regency). Upon arrival then check-in at local accommodation, after lunch walk to Syuru village, Asmat museum and Asmat foundation. Afternoon back to our Local Inn and overnight stay.  (Supposed it is Thursday)

Breakfast at losmen, and then together with our cooks and helper on board the motorized canoe for about 3 hours to Beriten village. Lunch will have at a long house in Beriten, afternoon rowing with the Asmat tribe paddle up river to see the wild life in jungle and late afternoon back to the village for dinner and overnight stay at long house.

After breakfast, prepare our stuffs for leaving then heading Omandesep for 3 hours by motorized canoe ride thru the ocean, will pass 2 big rivers and afterward arrive at the village walk to the long house for check-in and then as usual when the guest is arrive the Asmat people will welcome the guest by direct the guest to their long house. After lunch paddle or walk in to the swampy jungle with the Asmat people to see them processing sago (by luck / sago is the main food in Asmat). The process to make pure Sago can be one day and some of the locals also take the sago worm for protein. You will have the chance to taste the local food. Late afternoon walk or paddling back to the village for dinner and overnight.

Omandesep lies far to the south from Agats, just close to the river called Faretsj. We spend the whole day here to comprehend the local daily life. Asmat peoples eat sago as their main food staple. Sago is taken from the sago tree which is thrive well in many part of Asmat.  Sago is growing well on the muddy area.  Sago ball is burn directly in the coal in their kitchen. It is a tasteless and hard to chew. Locals also go for fishing on the sea water. Fish, crabs, snails, etc are taken from the water. Domesticated plant is very rare in Asmat. Fresh water is mainly taken from the rain. So no wonder than fresh water is among the big problem in Asmat.

Back to Agats by motorized canoe. Lunch serve on boat. Arrive at Agats and you may walk around the town of Agats. Overnight at Local Inn.

We have a rest time in Agats

Early in the morning by motorized canoe to Ewer airport for the pioneer flight back to Timika. (Supposed it is Wednesday)
