Pura Tanah Lot, a Hindu temple dating to the 16th century, built on a rock formation just off the coast of Bali. Chances are good you may be familiar with the temple already, since it has become one of the iconic images of the island and is one of Bali’s foremost pilgrimage sites for Hindus and tourists alike. Like many other of the world’s famous monuments, the experience has been somewhat commercialized (there are souvenir shops lining the path down to the shore), but it is still a worth- while visit because of its importance to Bali’s religious history. The temple is said to been founded by the itinerant Hindu priest Nirartha in the 16th century; in the 1980s, the Japanese helped prop it up – literally – by loaning the Indonesian govern- ment money to add artificial rocks to support Tanah Lot’s crumbling foundation.

Explore the Bali Bird Park, home to the world’s greatest assemblage of Indonesian tropical birds, as well as species from Africa and South America. Meet a member of the park’s conservation team if available. You will learn more about the 250 types of bird that live here, as well as the unique flora and fauna that you will encounter in the walk-through aviaries.

Ayung River, which flows through central Bali. Spend about two hours running the rapids and cruising on bucolic stretches of the river that wend past towering cliffs, hidden waterfalls and clear pools where you can jump off your raft to swim in. Take the opportunity to observe Hindu shrines and rock carvings built on sheer rock faces beside the river. The rafting is not overly challenging, but very scenic and enjoyable.

Your peaceful ride atop your pachyderm will take you through rice terraces and small villages, affording you an ideal perch with which to observe local Bali life. The elephants you will be riding are actually not endemic to Bali; they are originally from Sumatra, and the elephant camp helps to rehabilitate and train them. All the proceeds of the camp go to helping the survival of this endangered species.
