Mount Kelimutu

The tri-colored lake Mt. Kelimutu stands at 1.639m above sea level is located in Kelimutu National Park, established as National Park in 1992 to protect the endemic flora and fauna of Flores.

Mt. Kelimutu is situated in the small town of Moni, about 50km from Ende and 62 km from Maumere.


Mt. Kelimutu is one of volcanoes in Indonesia that offers a remarkable scenery. Three volcanic crater lakes which are differ in color make Mt. Kelimutu special.

Lio tribe, the indigeneous people who settle near Mt. Kelimutu, believe that the crater lakes are the soul's dwelling place, age and behavior determine which lake the soul belong to. Tiwu Ata Bupu (Lake of Old People), Tiwu Ko'o Fai Nuwa Muri (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched or Enchanted Lake).


Mt. Kelimutu is best to visit early in the morning to witness the magnificent sunrise.
