A Bromo Ijen tour from Surabaya provides an exceptional way to explore Indonesia’s two spectacular volcanic sites. Located in East Java, these destinations are famous for their stunning sunrises, unique landscapes, and challenging yet rewarding treks.
The pick-up point is at the Airport or your hotel in Surabaya. The drive to the Bromo area from Surabaya typically takes 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic and weather conditions. You will travel in comfortable, air-conditioned vehicles to ensure a pleasant ride to the Bromo area.
Mount Bromo
Mount Bromo is an active volcano at 2,329 meters in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. While at Bromo, you’ll encounter the Tenggerese people, a local ethnic group known for their unique culture and traditional farming practices. They cultivate crops such as potatoes, cabbage, and onions on the fertile volcanic slopes. Engaging with the Tenggerese offers a rich cultural experience, providing insight into their way of life and resilience in farming such challenging terrain.
After exploring the wonders of Mount Bromo, your next destination is the Ijen Plateau, home to the famous Ijen Crater. The drive from Bromo to Ijen typically takes 5 to 6 hours, offering another scenic route through East Java’s diverse landscapes.
Mount Ijen Tour
The location of Mount Ijen Volcano’s crater (2.443 m) is on the border of Banyuwangi and Bondowoso region, East Java. Only two places in the world have this Blue flame natural phenomenon: Iceland and Ijen Crater, Indonesia. This natural phenomenon is ignited from sulphuric gas and emerges due to the cracks of the crater, with temperatures up to 600 degrees Celsius. You should do two hours of midnight hiking to reach the crater since the best time to see this blue fire is around 02.00 AM until dawn.
Crossing Over to Bali
The final leg of your Bromo Ijen tour takes you from the Ijen Plateau to the western part of Bali. This part of the journey typically involves a drive to the ferry terminal in Banyuwangi, followed by a short ferry ride across the Bali Strait to Gilimanuk. Once in West Bali, you’ll be in a less touristy but equally captivating part of the island.
Upon your arrival at Surabaya Airport, your guide will pick you up. After a meet-and-greet, you will be directly transferred for 3 - 4 hours driving to the Cemoro Lawang area overnight. You will enjoy the different views along the road, from the toll road to hilly terrain, with vegetable and fruit farms along the way. Check in to your hotel and enjoy free time at your leisure.

Morning call at 03:00 am, and then by 4 WD jeep, you will start your journey to enjoy the beauty of nature and the splendid sunrise at Mt. Penanjakan. From the viewpoint located on the rim of the Tengger caldera, you will enjoy the sunrise with its young volcanic view, including Mt. Bromo and the active Mt. Semeru in the background. Then, proceed to Mount Bromo crater through the shimmering sea of sand. You will climb up the 245 steps of stairs to reach the ridge of Bromo Caldera. After enjoying the beautiful panorama and taking pictures, you will return to your hotel for breakfast and freshen up.
After breakfast, you will drive to the Ijen area via Probolinggo. You will arrive at your hotel late afternoon, check in, and rest due to the early rise the next day.

At 02.00 a.m., you will have breakfast with coffee or tea before departing to Paltuding. Paltuding is the point from which you start trekking to Mount Ijen. It takes about 1.5 hours to hike the 3 kilometers to the top. You can enjoy a panorama of Ijen Crater Lake on the edge of the crater. Besides, you can see a lot of sulfur miners with a load of around 80 kilograms on their shoulders walking up the rim and down the mountain's slopes. After you enjoy the Ijen Crater Lake, you can still visit the sulfur factory where sulfur is purified and packed in the village of Licin.
Ijen Crater is about 175 meters deep and shows a particular type of volcanic feature common to Indonesia. The floor is covered entirely by a warm lake, milky blue-green in color. In certain parts of the crater, where the sulfur miners gathered the sulfur, you will see the blue fire or blue flame.
If the wind is not blowing in your direction, you will be able to come closer to the blue flame, but if it comes in your direction, the smell will be really strong. After sometimes you will climb up to the rim of the crater and enjoying the sunrise light warm you up.
Afterward, rejoin your car and drive back to the hotel for breakfast and freshen up. Then, at the appropriate time, you will be transferred to Ketapang Harbor in Banyuwangi for a one-hour ferry crossing to Bali. Arriving at Gilimanuk Harbor, you will continue driving to West Bali.

We rise early after midnight, about 1 am, for the Mt. Ijen (2.400 m) excursion. From your hotel you will be transfer for an hour to Paltuding area through the rain forest. From Paltuding area you will trekking up for about 2 hours to the crater rim, and another 30-45 minutes trekking down to the crater. Ijen Crater shows a special type of volcanic feature common to Indonesia, about 175 meters deep. The floor is covered completely by a warm lake, milky blue green in color, held back by a dam built many years ago by the Dutch, in order to keep the hot mineral, laden water from raining for the crop lands below. In certain part in the crater where the sulfur miners gathered the sulfur, you will see the blue fire or blue flame. If the wind not blowing to your direction you will be able to come closer to the blue flame, but if it come to your direction, the smell will be really strong. After sometimes you will climb up to the rim of the crater and enjoying the sunrise light warm you up. On your way back you will meet many sulfur miner carrying 60-70kgs on their bare shoulders for 2 miles ascending and descending the steep Mt. Ijen slopes. Afterward rejoin your car and drive back to the hotel for breakfast and freshen up. At the appropriate time we will start driving back to Surabaya airport to catch your flight out from Surabaya.
