Timor Leste’s cultural heritage is multi-layered – a fascinating combination of traditional Portuguese, Timorese, Portuguese, and Indonesian influences. This multi-layered culture permeates their local cuisine, clothing styles, architecture, and artistic endeavors. Timorese culture continues to evolve in handicrafts, local arts, as well as in music and dance. Cultural motifs, both modern and old, are incorporated into the design of tais – wood carving, hand-woven textiles, and basketwork. Cultural groups still perform traditional dances and songs and also are entertaining in new ways. Talented Timorese dance groups perform in local venues and at festivals.
