Trekking Bodogol Nature Reserve
- One Day
Easy
Proceed to Bodogol (approximately a 1.5 – 2 hour drive from Jakarta in normal traffic conditions), a conservation spot on the foot of Gede Pangrango mountain. First, we need to drive to Lido. We can park the car at the meeting point where our 4×4 WD will be picked up, and we will start our off-road journey. From the meeting point, we went off-road for about 40 minutes, passing through the local garden/farmland to the site’s entrance.
Once you arrive at the site, prepare for an exhilarating adventure. Walk deep into the jungle of Bodogol and step onto the canopy bridge. This unique experience allows you to observe the rich diversity of flora and fauna in the park from a new perspective. The reserve is home to various wildlife, including primates such as the Javan gibbon and the Javan langur, as well as numerous bird species and other mammals. The area includes lowland rainforests and montane forests, providing different habitats for various species. There are several trails for hiking and exploring the natural environment.
Located within the Mount Gede Pangrango National Park, the Bodogol Conservation & Jabban Gibbon Center is a living laboratory for researchers. The park has a canopy trail, hanging twenty-five meters above ground, and a walkway suspended between trees where visitors can bird watch and glimpse wildlife living in the rainforest canopy. Established in 2003, it resulted from a strong collaboration between the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry and the Javan Gibbon Foundation. The center is further supported by Conservation International Indonesia, Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park, the University of Indonesia, and the Silvery Gibbon Project (SGP), ensuring its credibility and commitment to conservation.
The bird species found consisted of 51 species in 30 families. The most common families were the Decaidae and Silviidae families, with the average discovery on the Canopy Trail and Rasamala. Protected birds include the Malaysian pied fantail, greater green leafbird, Blue-winged leafbird, Crimson sunbird, Javan banded pitta, and Mountain swiftlet. There were 18 types of herpetofauna, consisting of 8 kinds of amphibians and 10 types of reptiles.
A big waterfall also offers a nice wash-up after a tiring walk on this day. In the afternoon, we will have about two hours of trekking through the thick jungle. Then, we will head back to Jakarta.
