Flying from Jakarta to Bandar Lampung and drive 2.5 hours by car, you can reach and enjoy Way Kambas National Park easily. Way Kambas National Park (130.000 ha) lies on Sumatra’s southeast coast in the province Lampung and has been declared as an ASEAN Heritage Park back in 2016. It consists of swamp forest, lowland rainforest, mangrove forests, Nibung swamps and vast areas of grass-land. The park itself not only famous for its Sumatran Elephant, but it is actually more than that!

The Sumatran elephant is an endangered species and protected both by Indonesian and international regulations. Therefore, since 1985, to solve elephant conflicts and to conserve the elephant, the government has set up six Elephant Training Centres in Way Kambas. A number of factors, such as forest fires, human resettlement, logging, timber estates, plantations, agriculture expansion, shifting cultivation, and road-building commonly cause the fragmentation and degradation of the island’s elephant habitat. These activities, which are increasing year by year, have resulted in a rapidly shrinking elephant habitat and are responsible for the increase in the number of conflicts between elephants and humans each year.
