Baliem Valley Festival

The Baliem Valley Festival is a unique celebration of the local tribe’s culture, customs, and tradition. During this cultural festival, the tribes living near Baliem Valley are gathered and show their tribal attractions such as war dance, pig cooking, traditional music, pig race, and many others. The festival is consistently attended by hundreds of local tribes. All of them come with their own traditional costumes such as head cover, tattoo, spear, grass skirt, and penis gourd.
This cultural celebration is held annually in the heart of Papua, usually in August, and it lasts for three days. It is one of the most popular cultural festivals in the world, attracting tourists from all over the globe. The festival is filled with traditional dances, music, and ceremonies that showcase the rich culture of the Dani tribe.

The Baliem Valley Festival is a way for the Dani tribe to celebrate their heritage and traditions. The festival is a rare opportunity for visitors to experience the tribe’s way of life, which has remained unchanged for centuries. During the festival, visitors can witness the tribe’s traditional dress, including the iconic Koteka, which is a penis gourd worn by men. The festival also features cultural performances, such as the mock battle, which is a reenactment of the tribe’s past warfare.

In addition to cultural performances, the Baliem Valley Festival also features sports competitions, such as traditional archery and pig racing. The festival also includes a market, where visitors can buy traditional crafts and souvenirs. The festival is a fantastic opportunity to immerse oneself in the local culture and experience the beauty of Papua.
Due to LIMITED Accommodation in Wamena, We suggest you book earlier as mostly there will be NO ROOM available for booking close to the 2023 Baliem festival date.
Arrive in Wamena, then proceeds to Pasar Baru at Jibama market. There is a place where locals show local/tribal art for sale. Among them are the Koteka, grass skirt, arrow, arch, spear, stone axe, and stones with a fossil in them, etc. Personal Lunch at a local restaurant, then we drive up to Napua hill & Sinatma village, from where you can have a nice view over the huge valley of Baliem. Wamena looks like sits on the bottom of a huge valley.
Then, we head to the hotel. Rest time.

After breakfast, we drive about 30 minutes to Baliem Valley Festival. We will enjoy wonderful and complete cultural performances from Baliem Valleys Tribes and other tribes. There are many tribes that attend the festival such as Dani Tribes, Lani Tribes, a few Yali Tribes, and other tribes that attend this Festival. A lunch box is provided.

Breakfast at the Hotel. Then, we drive from Hotel to Aikima Village about 25 minutes as a starting point for trekking.
The trekking today will be easy-moderate trekking. It will take about 3.5 Hours with the nice landscape through Dani Village like Pabuma and Suroba also we will pass by a sweet potato garden, along with trekking some time we cross the small river with the traditional bridge also we will meet local people working in a farm.
Afternoon back to the hotel.

Fly back to Jayapura. From the airport, we drive to Sentani Lake, then, we will ride the small motorized wooden boat to cross the lake of Sentani. There are 2 villages we can visit, first is the village of Ayapo, on the mainland across the lake, about 20 minutes to the south, then to Asei village, about 10 minutes from the center of the lake.
There are about 90 families living in the stilt house in this village, most of them are fishermen, and in their spare time, they make handicrafts. In Ayapo Small Island, there are about 32 families, also fishermen as well making handicrafts. Personal Lunch at the restaurant on the lakeside while enjoying the peaceful surrounding area. Then proceed to Cendrawasih Museum and Hamadi art market.
