Trekking Baliem Valley

During trekking Baliem Valley you will explore the Dani tribe, which among the largest tribal group living both in southern and northern Baliem Valley. They live in the traditional compounds where they build their house from wood and grass and usually round in shape.

Dani tribe villages are scattered all the way from the hilly terrain and the flat land in the valley. They live from sweet potato planting, pig raising, and sometimes hunting in the forest. Nowadays, they still practice their old traditional way of living. Wooden spear, wooden ax, bone knife,  bamboo arrow, etc are still used daily. Dani man wears only a penis gourd,  while the woman wears a grass skirt. Some young peoples living near to Wamena wear T-shirt already.

Sweet potato is planted nearby the compound, while the pigs are eaten together with the sweet potato. Sometimes also used as dowry as well as for the sacrification during a traditional fest.

Sogokmo Village, 40 minutes drive from Wamena, is your Baliem Valley trekking starting point.

Baliem Valley trekking’s scenery is incredibly beautiful combined with small villages and local people working in the field.

  • Arrival at Sentani airport of Jayapura
  • Met by our guide then check in to the hotel in Jayapura.
  • Free program, Jayapura City tour.
  • Fly to Wamena by the 1st flight.
  • Drive for 40 minutes to Sogokmo, the starting point of the trekking with your guide, cook and local porters. Trek will be 4 hours through Kurima District and passing some Dani sweet potatoes gardens.
  • Arrive at village in the afternoon and you may walk around, while your cook prepares for dinner.
  • Overnight stay at a local house of Kilise.

  • Proceed to descend the steep hill down to the traditional hanging bridge across Baliem river. Today's walk is a little harder with narrow and slippery paths. But you may enjoy the nature's beauty by stopping in the small waterfall to get refreshing while the cook serving lunch.
  • After this part, the path gets smaller and tricky until you find another river with no bridge to cross.
  • Trekking about 4-5 hours to Syokosimo village.
  • Overnight at a local house.

  • Trekking up to Hitugi village. Climbing up the hill all the way to the village.
  • Arrive at the village by noon where the cook is ready to serve your lunch.  (Today's trekking  is the shortest one, approximately 3 hours).
  • Dinner and overnight at Hitugi village.

  • Leaving Hitugi Village. The walk today is the longest one, but the terrain is not very difficult as trails wider and the panorama is so evicting. Passing Kurima village
  • Arrive Sogokmo Village where the car ready to take you back to Wamena. Lunch served en route.
  • Dinner at hotel in Wamena 
  • Overnight at Baliem Pilamo hotel or more luxury at Baliem Valley Resort.

  • Drive for 30 minutes to Jiwika in the North of Baliem valley to see the 250 years old Mummy.
  • Walk for 10 minutes to the  Anemoigi Village to watch the Mock war battle and Pig feast. You will see how the Dani make fire traditionally, kill a pig with bow and arrow and cook them into the hot-burned stone with vegetables and sweet potatoes. Lunch box will be provided.
  • After lunch, climb to the salt pool on top of Mili mountain or visit the cave of Wosilimo.
  • Afternoon return to Baliem Pilamo hotel or the luxury Baliem Valley Resort.
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Transfer to the airport for your flight back to Jayapura.
  • Arrival at Jayapura
  • A full day sightseeing to Mac Arthur WW II monument
  • Boating Sentani lake.
  • Having lunch at Yougwa restaurant near the lake.
  • After lunch, see the Anthropology museum (open from Monday to Saturday at 09.00-14.00), and visit the Hamadi 'souvenir' market.
  • Back to the hotel for overnight and dinner.

In some part of this tour where we need to sleep in a local village, you will be sleeping inside a tent that built inside a Honai/traditional hut, in which you will have a unique experience of living local daily life sleeping inside the hut. However the usage of tent is necessary to maintain your privacy and also protection from bugs.
