The indigenous population of the Baliem Valley is known as the Dani people. Dani is one of the largest tribal groups living both in the southern and northern Baliem Valley. They are scattered all the way from the hilly terrain and the flat land in the valley. The Dani still live traditionally. One of their uniqueness is their round shape house, built from wood and grass. Their main source of livelihood is sweet potato planting and pig raising. The Dani still practice their old traditional way of living. The wooden spear, wooden ax, bone knife, and bamboo arrow are still used daily. It shows by their clothes too. The man of Dani wears only a penis gourd, while the woman wears a grass skirt. However, with the modern influence, some young people living near Wamena have worn T-shirts.
Baliem Valley Tour Guide
At the arrival gate of Jayapura airport, you will meet our team. Then you will be assisted to the departure terminal for your next flight to Wamena. Arrive at the Wamena airport and meet our Papuan local English-speaking Baliem Valley tour guide. For the time being, only local English-speaking guides are available.
For a group tour, we could arrange a request for a guide translator in other languages at extra cost from other regions of Indonesia (mainly Sulawesi or Bali). The extra cost is applied to cover the guide expenses (guide fees, flight tickets from and to the place of origin, meals, and accommodations). The more participant in your group, the cheaper the guide extra cost applied as it will be shared between your group participant.
