The Orangutan Tapanuli (Pongo tapanuliensis) was identified as a new species in 2017. This critically endangered great ape species is endemic to the Batang Toru area in North Sumatra. Based on genetic, morphological, and behavioral differences, it is distinct from the Sumatran orangutan and the Bornean orangutan. It is considered the most threatened great ape in the world.
The 4-Day, 3-Night Tapanuli Orangutan Tour is an intensive, full-immersion trekking expedition in the Batang Toru Forest, North Sumatra, the last habitat of the critically endangered Tapanuli orangutan (with fewer than 800 orangutans remaining). Professional guides focus on tracking wild individuals using signs like nests, with all overnights spent exclusively in tents or simple base camps.
