North Sumatra offers an incredible journey that combines wildlife encounters and stunning natural beauty. This 11-day trip takes you from the rainforests of Tangkahan and Bukit Lawang to the serene landscapes of Lake Toba.
The journey begins in Medan, the provincial capital. From there, you will drive to your first destination, Tangkahan, known as “The Hidden Paradise.” It’s a quieter and less-developed area, famous for its elephant conservation and community-based eco-tourism initiatives.
Tangkahan’s main attraction is the opportunity to wash and feed the Sumatran elephants. It offers a unique and ethical interaction with these majestic animals. Tangkahan also offers trekking through the rainforest, where you might spot other wildlife and enjoy the pristine natural surroundings.
From Tangkahan, a journey takes you to Bukit Lawang, at the edge of Leuser National Park. This Park is the most famous place for encountering wild and semi-wild Sumatran orangutans. After a long trek, our guides will take you back to the village on inner tubes down the Bohorok River, offering a fun and refreshing way to end the day.
From Bukit Lawang, your journey continues to Lake Toba. The largest volcanic lake in the world is home to Samosir Island. Samosir is the cultural heart of the Toba Batak people. Visit traditional villages like Ambarita and Simanindo to see traditional houses, ancient stone chairs, and watch Batak dance performances.
In the morning, visit the Royal Palace of Sultan Deli, also known as Maimon Palace, which was built in 1888. Visit the Grand Mosque, “Mesjid Raya”, built in 1906, which is the largest in town, and then transfer directly to Tangkahan for an overnight stay.
